This summer, the Bay Area was introduced to a brand new musician that started recording music with one thought in mind: simplicity. Only armed with a small Marshall amp, a pair of Fender guitars and his iPhone 6, singer/songwritter Saint Paul (aka Jacob Schmidt, guitar for Overland) set out to record his first five song EP, Feel The Creeps, that mostly consisted of old material that he has written over the past 3 years. In this day an age where technology is so readily available in the blink of an eye, Jacob decided to work on his music exclusively on his cell phone for the entire recording and mixing process for this project as a way of showing artists that you don't necessarily need to rely on anyone else when it comes to creating the music you hear in your own head. This type of creativity is key to the progression of the individual artist and music as a a whole.
If people could realize that dedication, time and effort can allow you to do anything you set your mind too, we would be seeing so many more talented artists start to emerge from the melting pot more constantly. Instead, we are stuck It's the little artists like Saint Paul that are sitting in their house, potentially writing the number one hit of tomorrow because they are up all night trying the things that they feel will create the best music possible.....and its all done for himself. The sheer joy or recording and seeing a song through to the end is enough of a reward to keep at it over the years to come.
With all those kind words being said, it is my pleasure to announce that Mr. Schmidt will be releasing a new batch of iPhone 6 only tracks in the beginning of next year. The newly titled, five song EP "Five for the Road", has a much heavier blues influence throughout this EP than his first EP, which was inspired by the work of Ty Segall and some of Neil Young's earlier recordings. With his deep passion for all and any blues music, Jacob feels as if he's finally headed down the right path with his own personal music. Though he loves every minuet of his time rocking out in Overland, he has always wanted to do a true blues record in the style of BB King, Buddy Guy and more recently, Joe Bonamassa. Now that the Saint Paul project has been created this past summer, he can finally try and get some of those troublesome blues out of his head and into his music.
With no official release day set, we will be keeping a close eye on Saint Paul for the coming months to ensure that we don't miss any news on this record. Until then, he has released two brand new tracks on his Soundcloud page right here, "The Thrill is Gone" and the original track, "Get Some Rest." He pays tribute to the late great BB King, and the later of the two songs has a very Clapton-y sound in his vocals/guitar that starts to emerge near the 3/4 mark of the song that makes this one of my personal favorites by Saint Paul. Check back with us to learn more in the coming months about the new Saint Paul music that will be coming out, thank you for reading!
